Local Interest

St Josephs GAA club draws its membership from all over the peninsula, from San Jose right up as far north as San Francisco. The majority of our members come from Sunnyvale and Mountain View in Santa Clara County, or what has come to be better known as Silicon Valley.

Here was once a huge agricultural area famed for its endless acres of orchards producing apples, lemons, cherries, grapes and all the fruit and veg that can grow in such conditions. In more recent years the area has changed a lot. The fields have been replaced by parking lots. The crops have been swept away and replaced by office parks. The country roads have been replaced by freeways and expressways.

Now the employers in the area draw people from all over the world to work in the highly skilled high technology industries.

Semiconductors, software and hardware have replaced fresh produce as the new sources of wealth and prosperity for the valley. It is here in the cities of the south bay that a whole new exciting era has come to pass and where dreams are made.

The location provides the best of many worlds. The lively seaside resort of Santa Cruz with it's sparkling beach and busy boardwalk is around an hour's drive away. One hour's drive to the north is San Francisco with its nightlife, tourist attractions and diverse population of cool people from all races, nations and walks of life. In the winter you can drive up to Lake Tahoe for a weekend's skiing. If you stay put in the south bay you'll find yourself living in a beautiful climate and an idylic, clean, crime-free zone, whether it's in the sleepy suburbs of Sunnyvale or the bustling student town of Palo Alto.
