Joseph's Through to Final
San Francisco Football Championship
St Josephs 0-14 Shannon Rangers 1-10
Despite starting off with the wind at their backs,
San Jose took around ten minutes to settle into this crucial game
at Kezar Stadium on Sunday by which time a 3 point deficit had accrued.
However they knew that they could not afford a repeat of the debacle
at the challenge game at Millbrae on Tuesday night. Fergal Finnan
and Brian Kerney managed to close the gap with some impressive points
from play and by half-time Josephs had turned their three point
disadvantage into a two point lead.
San Jose burst onto the scene in the second half
and shocked Rangers by getting some very quick scores. However the
momentum which had been built up was slowed somewhat when a penalty
was awarded to Rangers. Rangers converted it to a badly needed goal
and narrowed the gap to one point. However the Silicon Valley men
didn't let this get them down, they maintained their composure,
stayed on the attack and kept extending their lead.
With two minutes left on the clock St Josephs were
three points ahead. Rangers closed the gap to one point with a pair
of points both from frees. In a dramatic climax to the game in injury
time, Rangers got a 30 yard free which they were told would be the
last kick of the game. They knew they needed a point to tie it.
With everyone in Kezar Stadium holding their breath, their free-taker
missed the crucial shot, the referree blew the game up and San Jose
made it into the final in two weeks time against Ulster.
