Borus edged out by Joseph's in friendly
Football - July 3rd, 2002
St Josephs 2-12 Sons of Boru 2-9
The challenge game between St Josephs and Borus
on Wednesday night served as a good warm-up for the championship.
The game started in the twilight and progressed under floodlit conditions
with an icy cold wind blowing off the bay.
The early stages of the game saw the San Jose men
taking their time to get into their stride with Borus cutting through
the mid-field and taking several points, although as time wore on
the Burlingame defence seemed to slack off with the marking and
Josephs started to gain a bit more momentum. The half-time scoreline
saw the sides level at 1-4 to 0-7 to San jose.
Josephs got the second half off to a good start
with a goal by Ross . They started to win more breaking balls, although
they were not always able to do anything with them. Despite this
and despite the Burlingame men getting an unexpected goal from a
free kick, San Jose were able to keep racking up the scores including
a superb point by Colm Brazil from an unfeasibly tight angle. There
was another shot soon after which, reminiscent of a certain soccer
game in 1966, hit the crossbar, bounced vertically to the ground
on the line and was almost deflected into the back of the Borus
net only to be stopped by the keeper. This was one of many opportunities
that were missed
San Jose showed enough tenacity to kill the game
and finish with a respectable scoreline of 2-12 to 2-9. A gentle
evenings kickaround it certainly wasn't.
